WHY I WRITE

Why I Write.

Truman Capote would say that I don't write. I type.

I  have to completely agree. To me, a writer has an artistic bent to their craft. I would say that I am much less of a 'writer' than I was four years ago. Following a long and torturously clinical Law degree I find the process of sitting down and writing to be an altogether more difficult experience - you would not believe how long I sat staring at this previously blank page before I managed to string a sentence together. Having only written a dozen or so papers each year and having no room for any creative expression this type of writing feels pretty alien. I have just written a paragraph of text and I haven't written a single foot note; I'm almost breaking out in hives.

So, why am I typing?
Firstly, I want to talk to people. I've never really been one to keep a private diary or journal - I tried for one year about a decade ago; it was pathetic. I'd much rather have my typing open to be read by others if they have any interest in it. I suspect I'll be writing about all manner of subjects in as many different forms. I have a creeping feeling that not everything I write will be correct, popular, interesting, entertaining or informing but I hope that it is at least a little thought provoking. I'll be writing about the things I enjoy; the things that make me tick and keep me up at night; my pet-peeves and the secrets that make me me. It will just be a joy to be able to talk about everything that means the world to me with similarly minded people!

Secondly: exercise. My writing muscle has become rather flabby and it is a muscle that I used to enjoy being able to rely on to be able play with and explore. I'm hoping that by doing a daily set of literary press-ups I'll be able to begin to enjoy writing again.
